TOGETHER WILL WE WIN? THE GAZA WAR IN HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE

SEPTEMBER 8, 2024 – 7:00 p.m.
Conversation with Professor LUIS LEV GRINBERG

Founder of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Ben-Gurion University, former president of the Sociological Association of Israel and Israeli social activist, he is currently involved in the Mizrahi Citizen Collective. Specializing in political, historical, and economic sociology, his fields of research are the history of the Zionist Labor Movement, the political economy of Israel, and the sociology of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The slogan “Together We Will Win” arose in Israel immediately after the massacre carried out by Hamas on October 7, 2023 in Southern Israel. It was a call for unity against the enemy, a mobilization for war, in a violent and decisive retaliation. The main fear, in addition to the horror of the attack, was the internal division within Israeli society and politics. This division was accentuated in 2019, with five consecutive elections, which caused a breakdown of the democratic regime, and almost a year of massive demonstrations against the far-right government, which was trying to carry out an undemocratic reform.
In this talk Professor Grinberg presents a historical perspective of the internal divisions within Israeli society since the creation of the Jewish State, and its deterioration into internal hostilities since the beginning of the peace process in 1993 and the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Despite the slogan calling for national unity against the enemy and war, Israeli society is increasingly divided and the army is stuck in a war where there is no possible victory.
In this conversation we will see the connection between the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the internal divisions within Israeli society, analyzing the alternative between political or military solutions.
Grinberg has published eight books in Hebrew, English, and Arabic; one of them, translated into Spanish: Politics and Violence in Israel/Palestine. Democracy vs. Military government (Prometeo, 2012). His numerous publications include dozens of articles and opinion columns: We highlight some of the most recent: “The fragility of Israel is not military but of Democracy” (October 2023), “Deceive, Defy and Defer, Netanyahu's Time-Tested Strategy to outmaneuver Biden” (July, 2024).
